Established in 1861, the District Museum in Toruń is one of the oldest and largest museum institutions operating continuously to this day within the current borders of the Republic of Poland. It has seven branches:

– Nicolaus Copernicus House – Museum of the History of Toruń (in the Esken House) – Museum of Toruń Gingerbread – Tony Halik Museum of Travelers – Museum of Far Eastern Art (in the House Under the Star) – Old Town Hall (main seat) – Toruń Fortress Museum

The museum has a very rich cultural offer – in its individual branches, visitors can find the rarest exhibits from distant Asia, masterpieces of Polish painting by artists such as Julian Fałat, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Chełmoński, Jan Matejko, Andrzej Wróblewski, Zdzisław Beksiński, Tadeusz Kantor, and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, unique souvenirs from the exotic travels of Tony Halik and Elżbieta Dzikowska, legendary Copernicana, unique archaeological finds, and finally, the gingerbread forms so famous for Toruń and everything related to gingerbread baking.

Every year, the institution organizes spectacular exhibitions, Museum Nights, international competitions for children and youth, various workshops, lectures, and meetings with famous personalities. 1 In addition, it has a rich publishing offer – it publishes professional studies, albums, catalogs, and popular science books.
